First-party domain: how to avoid ad blocker blocking¶
Ad blockers decide what to stop largely by hostname. Public lists and heuristic rules associate names like gtm, tracking or analytics with tracking — and block the script before it loads.
Choosing a subdomain that does not trip those signals is the cheapest form of protection there is: it does not change the implementation, it costs nothing, and it recovers events that would be dropped.
A first-party domain reduces blocking, it does not eliminate it
Choosing the name greatly lowers the chance of automatic blocking. It does not stop a visitor who blocks by their own rule, nor does it respect privacy choices — honoring the user's consent remains mandatory, including under LGPD and GDPR.
What to avoid¶
Do not use words directly tied to advertising or tracking in the subdomain:
ad, gtm, stgm, tracking, analytics, metrics, stape, gtag
The AdPulse dashboard warns when the chosen hostname contains one of those words:
Evite ad, gtm, stgm, tracking, analytics, metrics, stape ou gtag no subdomínio: navegadores e bloqueadores de anúncios costumam bloquear esses nomes.
Examples¶
| Hostname | Assessment |
|---|---|
gtm.meusite.com.br |
Avoid — gtm is on practically every block list. |
tracking.meusite.com.br |
Avoid — described by its own name. |
analytics.meusite.com.br |
Avoid — same reason. |
ads.meusite.com.br |
Avoid — ad appears at the start of the word. |
stape.meusite.com.br |
Avoid — the name of a competing sGTM platform, already listed. |
trk.meusite.com.br |
Acceptable — short and without the full term. |
s1.meusite.com.br |
Good — carries no advertising meaning. |
edge.meusite.com.br |
Good — neutral. |
go.meusite.com.br |
Good — common and neutral. |
Prefer short, neutral names
One- or two-letter subdomains, or neutral names like s1, edge and go, mean nothing to a heuristic filter. That is why the dashboard asks for a subdomain: it does not stand alone and cannot be confused with the site's main domain.
Where this shows up in the product¶
The guidance is the same in two places, and both follow this page:
- In the custom-domain creation panel — a warning before the form and a field alert while you type the hostname.
- How to connect a custom domain — the page recommends choosing the hostname before creating the record.
The hostname also changes where traffic flows¶
A first-party domain only solves the blocking problem. Where traffic flows is another question: with a custom domain, it goes through the network of your own DNS provider — the AdPulse global CDN applies to the shared hostname.
